Real-time System Encryption

On Feb 5th 2008 a new version of TrueCrypt was released. Version 5.0 of the free encryption software offers some basic enhancements and new features.

TrueCrypt now supports not only Windows and Linux but also Mac OS. Under Windows the read/write performance can speed-up by up to 100% due to pipelined operations. A graphical user interface for the Linux version is now available. The Linux version of TrueCrypt has been redesigned so that it will no longer be affected by changes to the Linux kernel. From now on the faster and more secure XTS operation mode is used for all encryption even though backwards compatibility is still given. Furthermore the out-dated SHA-1 hash for header key derivation was replaced by the SHA-512 hash algorithm.

That's all well and good, but the most promising innovation is the ability to encrypt a system partition or an entire drive on-the-fly. Thus all data on the computer are encrypted and protected from unwanted access.

But even if the system encryption provides the highest level of security and privacy, there are already opinions voiced regarding performance loss, problems with applications, network drives, raid systems...
